The First Snow Flakes

by B.

She was sitting by the window

Watching out Newton’s effect

On the small flecks

Of ice

Falling in the near shadow

She wondered what it felt

To be a snowflake.

She wanted to feel

Weightless

Lighter than a feather

She wondered.

She wondered

Whether the tiny crystals

In the flake realized

How cold they were.

They were there

Their atoms gathering

Elements

Arranging,

Creating,

Ever changing

Movements forming

Unique patterns

Becoming

Flakes, and…

Falling

Down

As they hit the ground

And land on our warmth

And melt on a hand

Do the flakes realize

How cold they are?

How cold they feel

Landing ice

To the touch

Of our skin?

She felt pressure.

She needed air.

She thought of her heart

Would it endure?

She opened the window

And offered her hand out to the cold

She could feel the brush of the wind

She turned her palm around

A flake landed there

Without a sound

She felt her hairs

Rise off their end

Her skin

As soon as they’d land

The specks of snow

Would turn to water

She knew elements couldn’t think.

Still she wondered

If a fleck of snow,

A drop of water could talk

About its fate,

Tell its story,

Trace it on a slate,

What would it say?

What does it face?

Would it state

Only what it had done as of late,

In the previous

Cycle of its transformation,

Or would it be in a position

To retrace

Its steps all the way to its creation?

To the time of the first apparition

Of its atoms?

What if it were to it have reason?

Critical thinking? Unforeseen.

If it could see into its future even,

Would it enter the same routine

Relentless, reason on season?

Being part of an endless cycle

Would it be daunting?

Comforting?

Both?

Water rain trees forests

Thirst oceans rivers birds

Living creatures absorb.

Dying beings resorb.

Or do they?

She stopped her train of thoughts (it was taking her nowhere)

And forced herself to feel (that would take her somewhere)

The presence of the precious drop again,

The essence of life was being transformed,

Absorbed by the warmth of her hand.

It did not matter where it’d been before,

Where it’d go tomorrow,

It was there with her now.

She felt a familiar hand

Land on her shoulder.

She turned around and looked at him.

She smiled.

She had her answer now.

It did not matter where he’d been before,

Where he’d go tomorrow,

He was there with her now.

He smiled back

And held her tight.
