Patience

Walls
All around me.
Thick, ancient
Walls of glass.

I have built them translucent,
Claiming the light beaming through
Sheltered me
From the shadows of my past,
From the greedy void
Of old
Open wounds.

I have built them so thick, though,
That what I can see through
Is blurred by the vapors of my fears —
Monsters lurking beneath
Smiling faces,
Poison spilling out
Kisses and words.

People come and go,
Too soft or too harsh,
Too slow or too fast,
Not interesting or not
Interested —
Not allowed to peek through
The walls, and
None of them ever
Crossed the threshold.

It is a bubble of
Comfortable emptiness —
Much like a tomb,
Enlightened by
Self-told lies.

There is this one, though, this
Intriguing,
Unexpected
Human being,
Standing next to the walls.

She is made of patience
And clarity,
And she quietly stares
Right through the glass,
Unafraid of
What she can see
Of me.

She lays her hand on the glass,
And I mirror the gesture,
Amazed to see her
So neatly;
And she waits.
She looks so serene, as if
She could spend eons
Just waiting.

I feel peaceful in this corner of my shell,
Standing
Remotely
Next to her;
And I know that she will not
Force her way through.

Her silence is telling me
To get out of my shell,
That she will be right there
When I —
And I alone —
Feel it’s the right time…

And I know that,
One day,
Finally,
I will
Shatter the wall of glass.

  1. Wow, this is such a lovely poem ☺️. The pacing is perfect throughout and sets the tone of the poem. Meanwhile, your emotions shine through it and the love and mutual respect between the two is clear to see. It was a great read ☺️

  2. What a gorgeous piece of poetry ❤ full of scattered gems forming an exquisite whole. "blurred by the vapors of my fears" just love the imagery of this expression, and these two paragraphs are just perfectly worded.

    "It is a bubble of
    Comfortable emptiness —
    Much like a tomb,
    Enlightened by
    Self-told lies."

    "She is made of patience
    And clarity,
    And she quietly stares
    Right through the glass,
    Unafraid of
    What she can see
    Of me."
